## Separate an input problem from a receiving-app problem

First scan a known, non-sensitive barcode into an ordinary text editor, then into ScannerBench. Differences between those observations help you decide where to look next. They do not, by themselves, identify a faulty device.

## How to use ScannerBench

1. **Check focus and completion.** Arm the capture field and select the suffix you expect. If text appears but no capture completes, use manual finish. Leaving the field stops active capture and preserves partial input as incomplete.
2. **Find the first difference.** Compare with the known encoded text. Inspect the first differing character, invisible characters and key events. Check the scanner's country setting against the host keyboard layout when punctuation or letters differ.
3. **Use the applicable reference.** Select the model, connection and operating system for available manual references. Record one setting and one observation at a time. Review a redacted report before passing it to support.

## A scan can arrive without an Enter key

If a scanner types the correct value but the expected next action never happens, inspect completion separately from the text. A keyboard Enter event is not automatically a carriage-return character in the captured value. Choosing the right completion mode avoids treating an unfinished capture as missing data.

## Questions

### Will ScannerBench change scanner settings?

No. It observes input and links to applicable reviewed manufacturer documentation. Any hardware change is a separate action using your device's instructions.

### Why might punctuation change?

Keyboard-country settings, the operating-system layout, input methods and receiving software can affect text before it reaches this page. The tool records browser observations, not the scanner's original bytes.

### Does it work with an industrial handheld?

It can receive input from a handheld that types into the normal browser field as a keyboard. Vendor-specific APIs and integrations are not included, and physical handheld/browser combinations still need checking.

## Current scope

Capture text from scanners that behave as a native keyboard. Inspect characters and browser key events, compare a known value, import shared test expectations and download a reviewed report. Enter, Tab, manual finish and opt-in idle completion are available.

This is a software-tested alpha. Physical scanner and OS combinations are not yet qualified. Model selection provides reviewed manual references; it does not detect, configure or certify a scanner. Raw HID, serial input, camera scanning, barcode decoding and GS1 interpretation are outside this release.

## Privacy

Scan values, expectations and device notes are processed in browser memory. No account, upload or tracking scripts are required. Reloading loses the session. Reports are redacted by default and downloaded only after review. Hosting may log ordinary page requests; suite links contain only a fixed referral marker.
